My brother 'n law was a man that never showed any signs of giving up or letting anyone down..a true gladiator. His journey will live on with me forever. He fought his battle hard and I will always remember him for his grace and courage. I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful it was to have Basil in my life. It was truly a blessing. His wife, my twin sister, has strength that is so inspiring. Their two boys Evan Basil, 6, and Shane Edward, 2, are pure examples of the love that Basil and Stacie shared together. We now have a phrase to honor and remember him... “Live Like Basil”. It means live life to the fullest, enjoy every second…treasure the memories.

Below is the time line of my beloved brother 'n law's last years on this earth, as penned by my sister.

Imagine your life close to perfect--or your idea of perfect. Now throw in a wrench--throw in a big monkey wrench. Call it a brain tumor, label it's parts cancer. Take a deep breath, bawl your eyes out crying. Hear the word chemo, swallow hard. Hold back your tears again--walk to your car cursing at God asking why. Go home, pick up your 5 month old son -- watch him smile. Feel his innocence -- remember that God only gives you what you can handle, and this is something we can handle.

December 21, 2006. Brain Tumor found. One week later. Removed Brain Tumor and soon discovered that the tumor was cancerous and that 5% remained intact.

Our Journey Begins...

May 20, 2010. Shane Edward Guirguis was born and joined his older brother. Our little miracle.

March of following year... here we are again. Basil is the strongest man I know. Tumor appears more aggressive than the last one. Grew 4 cm in 3 months. With prayers, positive thinking and LOVE, he will prevail. Please continue to keep him alive in your thoughts and prayers. Our sons, Evan and Shane need him and so do I. I want to grow old with this man. He makes me a better person. When Basil smiles, the whole world smiles with him...we all need a little bit of Basil in our lives. I love you...

One month later. Grade 4 Brain Tumor. Our Lives are Forever Changed. Prayers go up and blessings come down.

May 31, 2012. He is still fighting as expected ... but things are labored. It's getting much harder. God is wanting him. My love for this man is infinite. His love for you all will be felt from above, I promise you this. Today I will continue to honor Basil. He is a survivor, a warrior and an awesome, awesome soul. I love you, Basil.

Later same day. My husband received his angel wings today, May 31, 2012 at 3:35 pm. I laid in bed with him as he took his last breath. He was surrounded by family and immense love. His fight is over and he can be free of this disease. He will always be my gladiator.

Donations will help family pay for overwhelming medical costs and provide overall financial support as they settle into their new life in Edison without their loving husband and father. Please consider celebrating the life of Basil by walking/running or sponsoring the Guirguis family through STEPS TOGETHER.  Checks can be made payable to Stacie Guirguis. Thank you for your support and prayers.
